Third Day Reflection

Third Day (26 May, Thursday)

  • Project Sharing Sessions
    • Note down at least three key learning points
    • I have learnt that fleming left hand rule applies for motors
    • I have learnt that fleming right hand rule applies for generators
    • I have learnt that in both rules mentioned above, the thumb represents the direction of force, the index index represents the magnetic field and the middle finger represents the current direction.
  • How do you feel about the NTU-SST Flagship programme?
    • Share your insights for the programme in general
    • I am grateful to NTU for the opportunity to go into their school and learn about this interesting topic. I appreciate their hospitality towards us and I thank Professor Leek, accompanied by the student helpers, to guide us throughout the duration of this project.

Second day reflection

Second Day (25 May, Wednesday)
  • What did you do today?
    • We used a generator and I was explained and taught the fleming's left hand rule which is for generators and is almost the same as the fleming left hand rule, just on the right hand.
  • What did you learn today?
    • Fleming's right hand rule applies for generators but the left hand rule applies for motors.
    • It was fun and interesting that I could make a light bulb light up by turning the handle of the generator.
    • It was very fun working in the group and I have benefited a lot from my teammates' sharings. it has helped me to understand the concepts taught more.
  • What new questions do you have regarding the discipline?
  • I want to know if the generator will turn faster if the light bulb is taken out.

First Day Reflection

First Day (24 May, Tuesday)
  • What did you do today?
    • My groupmates and I built the electric motor from the kit that was provided. Initially, I thought that it would be really hard to build the motor but eventually realised that all we had to do was to follow the instruction manual.
  • What did you learn today?
    • I learnt about Fleming's Left-hand rule, the thumb pointing to the thrust or motion, the index finger pointing to the magnetic field and the middle finger pointing to the direction of current.
  • How do you feel about today’s activities?
    • I understand more about magnetic fields
    • I have benefited a lot today in terms of knowledge of DC Motors and I am grateful for the opportunity to build one.

Pre Camp Reflection

Pre-camp (23 May, Monday)
  • The interesting part about this project is that we can build electric motors and watch them in action while applying Fleming's Left Hand Rule.
  • I did some background research before hand and I am excited to learn about Fleming's Left Hand Rule, its applications and the conditions for it to work.
  • I am interested to know if the Fleming's Left Hand Rule always works
